paul ryan where i believe joe biden really took it to paul ryan and basically not to be too polite about it, kicked his ass. now governor jennifer granholm joins me. i want to start here on a bite with joe going aggressively after paul ryan and we'll come back and talk about that. >> it shouldn't be surprising for a guy who says 47% of the american people are unwilling to take responsibility for their lives. my friend recently in a speech said 30% of the american are takers. these guys bet against america all the time. stop talking about how you care about people. show me something. show me a policy. if they get out of the way and let us pass the tax cut for the middle class and makes it permanent. if they get out of the way and pass the jobs bilker if they get out of the way and allow us to help 14 million people who are struggling to stay in their homes.

just get out of the way. i never met two guys who were down on america across the board. these people are my mom and dad the people i grew up with, my neighbors. folks, use your common sense. who do you trust on this. a man who introduced a bill who would race it $6,400 a year. they're elderly people who, in fact, are living off of social security. they are veterans and people fighting in afghanistan right now. let me tell you who some of those other small businesses are are, hedge funds that make $600 million to $800 million. that's who they count as small business. tax matters, martha. you're a foreign policy expert p facts matter. rce, you'd rather americans be going in-- >> we're already accepting americans to do the job but fewer of them. >> that's right. we're sending more afghans to do the job. afghans to do the job. >> cenk: well, that was the lead part. >> dude, highlight reel. that was awesome. >> cenk: wasn't it?

i loved when he said get out of the way. get out of the way. >> that is such a twist on what americans are always saying. if the government will get out of the way. hello, they're government, and they're blocking the progress that they're trying to make. it was a beautiful twist. i loved how he raised 47% right out of the gate. something that we're all missing in the first debate. >> cenk: there is so much to like there. when he said look, you care about people, but show it to me in your policy. your policies don't indicate that. when i look at how aggressive he was, i thought it was what did you think. >> jennifer: i totally thought it was refreshing. but it wasn't just his enthusiasm and compassion, but he was specific about it. his energy was great. he brought it to people. you know, when he looked at the camera and talked about who do you trust? that was a--ump! >> cenk: exactly. the lead pipe was rhetorical

attacks, but the blowtorch in my opinion was the substance and specifics. let's go to that. >> jennifer: you got more. >> with all due respect that is a bunch of malarky. not a similar thing he said is accurate. this is a bunch of stuff. >> what do you mean by bunch of stuff. >> it's inaccurate. >> their ideas are old, their ideas are bad. by the way they talk about this great recession as if it fell out of the sky like oh it come from? it came from this man voting to put two wars on a credit card. trillion dollars tax cut. he sent me two letters saying by the way can you send me stimulus money for two cops here--two companies here in the state of wisconsin. now they're so concerned about

[ chuckling ] >> cenk: even ryan had to laugh at that jack kennedy. you know, jennifer, i've been waiting for so long for someone to say hey you guys started the recession. you created the deficit and so biden finally came out and said it and then he throws the stimulus letters on top to rub it you just played showed the hypocrisy on a number of levels, the hypocrisy about who started the problem to begin with. but the most damning point of the debate for those of us interested in the domestic issues were those stimulus letters. who could ryan say? that's what we do. he says in the letter that it

was help to create jobs in his district and he admits it. >> cenk: oops. >> jennifer: oops is right. it goes to speak not just to him but all the republican congressmen who on the one hand are talking up and dising the stimulus, but on the other hand trying to get some for their districts so they could look good. i thought it was a beautiful movement. >> cenk: ultimateabsolutely: now of course a lot of people are talking about the way the vice president carried himself. we have a compilation on that, let's watch it and get your thoughts. >> this is a bunch of stuff. own statement. >> you both saw benjamin netanyahu. >> we call it malarky. >> we had these sanctions in place in spite of their opposition. >> can you tell the american people--go by the wayish-- >> there is another war in the middle east. >> the ayatollah see these kinds of statements and they think

[ laughing ] >> but i always say what i mean. >> cenk: so fox news watched that and have been crying ever since. every time you turn on fox news, i can't believe joe was so rude. i loved it. what was your take. >> jennifer: i know you loved it because it showed that he was-- was--that he couldn't believe that they were saying what they were saying with the way of demonstrating his disbelief in it. there were a couple of times where he was smiling and laughing at a point that was a very serious point. he was sort of laughing at what ryan's lies were, but he, you know, it might have looked like it bordered--but on the balance of it, he was having a great time. he looked like he was having

fun. he enjoyed himself being out there. he enjoyed the tussle. he wasn't grumpy about it. he wasn't disrespectful. he just looked like he was ready to play. >> cenk: see, i think that it was a strategy. i think he meant to be dismissive towards paul ryan, and make him look like a child. in our par lance here he put him in the middle of the ring, and he said, look, here's what i'm going to do to you. i'm going to drop that elbow on you whether you like it or not okay? [ laughing ] >> cenk: i think it worked because paul ryan looked young. he looked like stating talking points, and he got thrown off by it. >> jennifer: what looked best was when he was very specific about his friendship with netanyahu. the time he spent with world leaders, how many times he had been to afghanistan. he knows this stuff. he has been around it. with paul ryan it looked like he had memorized the names and all

of that, but it wasn't clear that he knew it. obviously joe biden was able to demonstrate that. >> cenk: when he got to the hard name paul ryan was like kandahar. and biden knows that. that came across very clear. let's go across what the american people thought. these are two poll snapshots, etc. but i think it's more important to look at these than to necessarily listen to pundits such as myself. a lot of times the pundits will call it evening and then you look at the numbers, and it won't be even. i am blown away by this, it is 48-4 want the audience to see that and know that in that instant poll. >> jennifer: that poll is of registered voters, a broad cross section. >> cenk: and cbs just looked at uncommitted voters, those guys you can swing. as you say the republicans and democrats are entrenchinged.

on cbs 50-31 for biden. that's a huge advantage. if you're on the democratic side, and you see those numbers are you happy on those numbers. >> jennifer: absolutely. especially on the uncommitted side. you want to be able to persuade them. every single one of these debates is a moment that you can have a moment to with the opportunity to persuade. i think it was exactly what you want to see. would you love to have seen it completely en route? yes but that's not realistic. >> cenk: and 19 points among uncommitted voters, that's pretty damn >> jennifer: the poll overpolled the republicans, but the underlying numbers did not reflect the whole population. >> cenk: jennifer granholm on "the war room," right here on current. check her out. when we come back we'll talk about media reaction.

surprised by fox news' crying, and i suppose i shouldn't be surprised, but the rest of the mainstream press as usual went with their gut it's a tie. >> first, let's put it in perspective. what the vice presidential debate really meant. only joe biden could have lost or won that debate. anything that paul ryan could have done would not have done anything. i think fox news does what they do and they do very well, frankly. they were critical about things which you could criticize joe biden. the way he smirked the way he smiled. i wish he didn't do it as much, frankly. but you saw what the administration had done. you saw biden talk. it. to see sean hannity say rude and condescending, they're the captains of rudeness and condescension. this is the regular stuff that you get out of a debate.

the stuff that we saw last week is not ordinarily what we get. >> cenk: let's go to an interesting side note here, which is whether they decided to do this going in. i don't think they just told joe, listen, do whatever you like. i think they told joe, laugh at him. make fun of him a little bit show him who is boss. do you think that is the strategy. >> i think you may be right. i don'ti don't think we'll ever know that, but if you look at joe biden, when you look at presidential debates and senator debates. he has been senator for 36 years and vice president whatever he has done for those 30 years it has worked. sometimes he does it too much, sometimes it works but the point is not whether he laughed too much or whether fox is happy with him. fox will never be biden. they were never happy with him as a senator. they paint him as an old crazy uncle. he has never been a crazy uncle. he has been a substantive

senator and now a substantive vice president. whatever they coached him to do, it was about getting those cogent arguments out there saying 47%. the things that the president didn't hit last week he basically hit. they said stop the bleeding, and i think he did that. >> cenk: and then he started the bleeding on the other side. let's turn to the moderator. of course the conservatives are crying about her. laura ingram sending out this message. why does raddatz wants to move on when ryan is getting traction. and then erica ferrari eric ericksen tweets, martha raddatz is in their camp it seems. let's go to b-7.

but counting interruptions. what about counting specifics. if you want to count the specifics that the vice president was able to come with versus the specifics and substance that ryan was able to come with, it's no contest. here we are sitting, talking about counting the interruptions, counting the smiles. i thought martha raddatz did a good job. she totally surprised me and i'm sure the vice president opening up with that bengahzi, libya question. she did a really good job i thought. >> cenk: that's how a moderator should be. tough and aggressive to both sides, and again it's a tell tale sign that the republicans have lost when they cry about the moderator which they do every time they lose, which is quite often. >> cenk, you're a huge sports fan. when you see complaining about the revenue know your team did well. when the other team is complaining about the ref that means that things are going your
